Safe Sun Sense

Reduce Sun Damage, Eat tomatoes! A study published in the British Journal of Dermatology found that healthy women aged 21 to 47 who ate 55 grams (about 1/4 cup) of lycopene-rich tomato paste daily for 12 weeks experienced significant protection against acute — and potentially long-term — sun damage.

Tip: Expose strategically and Know your skin type: The fairer you are, the less unprotected sun exposure you’ll need to produce adequate vitamin D since lighter skin synthesizes it more quickly. Darker skin requires more exposure for adequate vitamin D production. 5 minutes for those with fair skin to 20 minutes for darker complexions.

Unlock Your Productive Summer

Summer is the season when many people take time off work. While rest is great for your mental health, it can be disorienting not to feel productive. If this is happening to you, create a summer daily routine.

Tip: Consider taking walks in the morning sun - which is great for mental and physical health! Remember to apply sunscreen as needed.

Crack The Code For Healthier Eating

Food codes called PLU’s on your fruits and vegetables typically begin with a 3 or 4 number code and indicate that your fruit was grown conventionally, which includes the presence of pesticides.

If the label's code has five digits and begins with an 8 it’s a GMO (genetically modified). Twenty-six countries currently have a ban on GMOs.

If the number of the PLU code starts with a 9 it’s a bit more costly in the supermarket because growers have to meet farming standards to get their food labeled “organic." There are ways to save lots of money with organics. I will discuss this in the next tip.

Remember, words like "natural" or "nature" on your foods, jars or containers don't have to meet government standards and mean something very different from organic. Although the labels do tell you certain things, nothing is really 100% since the PLU system is voluntary and not mandatory. It is not governed by any agency. It’s just good people paying it forward.
